The onscreen tenement wedding in 1932 Yiddish film "Uncle Moses" is a tour de force. This drama, based on a Sholem Asch novel, and directed by Yiddish theater actor/producer Maurice Schwartz—who also stars in the title role—actually features a live band playing on-camera. For an early talkie, the technical quality of this extended and debauched party scene is excellent, although a few recorded audio loops are fairly obvious (including
a choppy excerpt of the ubiquitous “Heyser Bulgar”). The sections of our arrangement gleaned from this scene come from a musical number requested by Schwartz’s groom character himself, asking for an old-style European klezmer dance. This was not a tune we had heard anywhere before outside this movie soundtrack. Where certain phrases called for additional music, our arrangement brings in a section with “Skotshne #59” from the archival collections of Soviet Jewish ethnomusicologist Moishe Beregovsky.
