about

Live onstage from The Museum at Eldridge Street NYC.Trombonist Reut Regev improvises her solo, then leads into a tune found in several versions on early 20th c. recordings from both sides of the Atlantic: a New York-made 78 RPM disc by the Abe Schwartz Jewish Orchestra, recorded in February 1918; a pre-WWI 78 recorded in Eastern Europe by Belf’s Rumanian Orchestra; and a wax cylinder from Jewish Ukraine (1912–1914), sung there with lyrics in the first section about “Durniy, Durniy Marko” (Stupid, Stupid Marko). A melody variant sung in Yiddish is “S’iz nito keyn nekhtn” (Yesterday is Gone). The second section is also related to a wordless tune reportedly associated by Lubavich Hasidim with Mykolaiv in southern Ukraine.

about

Isle of Klezbos New York, New York

NYC-based ISLE of KLEZBOS approaches tradition with irreverence and respect. The soulful, fun-loving powerhouse all-women’s klezmer sextet has toured from Vienna to Vancouver since 1998. Repertoire ranges from rambunctious to entrancing: neo-traditional folk dance, mystical melodies,Yiddish swing & retro tango, late Soviet-era Jewish drinking song, re-grooved standards, & genre-defying originals. ... more
