about

Ismail Butera’s accordion taxim opens into a folk melody known in myriad
forms from Bosnia to Bangladesh. Much of this tune comes from the popular Turkish song “Kâtibim,” set in the scenic Üsküdar section of Istanbul. Fiery klezmer clarinet legend Naftule Brandwein recorded this as a lively terkisher (syncopated dance instrumental) in the 1920’s, providing more of an inspiration for us than the novelty pop hit released decades later by Eartha Kitt as “Usku Dara.”

Recorded in concert at Brooklyn Center for the Performing Arts, April 2013: Metropolitan Klezmer

about

Isle of Klezbos New York, New York

NYC-based ISLE of KLEZBOS approaches tradition with irreverence and respect. The soulful, fun-loving powerhouse all-women’s klezmer sextet has toured from Vienna to Vancouver since 1998. Repertoire ranges from rambunctious to entrancing: neo-traditional folk dance, mystical melodies,Yiddish swing & retro tango, late Soviet-era Jewish drinking song, re-grooved standards, & genre-defying originals. ... more
