Live onstage from The Museum at Eldridge Street NYC. Reedplayer Debra Kreisberg improvises her clarinet solo, leading into a tune known to us via repertoire of the early Soviet Yiddish Theater “GOSET” (gosudarstv’ennyj evrejskij teatr). Credited to the theater troupe’s musical director Lev Pulver—a conservatory-trained composer from a traditional Jewish musical family, who had also written for ballet and classical ensembles—this melody was already familiar from the Yiddish folk song “Forn forstu fun mir avek” (So You’re Leaving Me). A scratchy surviving copy of this piece as performed for the 1923 GOSET production of Sholem Aleichem’s cautionary comedy The 200,000 aka Der groyser gevins (The Big Win), complete with 27-piece orchestra, was re-released on the 2001 CD compilation “Cubo-Futurist Klezmer” by Mel Gordon and Yiddish film maven J. Hoberman. The Moscow-based theater’s own archives were destroyed in a “mysterious” 1952 fire. However, despite Stalin’s purges and WWII devastation, souvenir postcards and audio recordings sold decades earlier in GOSET’s lobby had been preserved by private collectors, fans loyal to the memories of the later-murdered stage company leader/actors Solomon “Shloyme” Mikhoels and Venyamin Zuskin. The music adapted here, simply labeled “Sher” on 78 RPM disc, had originally accompanied an opening choreography section surrounded by modernist stage settings by Marc Chagall, featuring happy tailors in a shtetl workshop.
